Foam Wheelchair Cushions

Foam wheelchair cushions are typically contoured for positioning and include a waterproof inner cover and a breathable outer cover.  Foam cushions are generally very light and considered to be the most maintenance-free. Foam can also be custom cut or molded to fit the shape of the user. Inherent with all foam, there is a propensity for it lose its shape over time and take a “compression set.” This means that the foam does not return to its original uncompressed height when the load is removed. This results in a reduction in the properties of pressure reduction and support. Foam wheelchair cushions can also hold moisture, which can promote skin breakdown. Depending on the cushion design, it may be advisable to add a solid insert under the foam or to replace the wheelchair’s seat upholstery with a solid drop base.
